This charcoal drawing by Margaret Emsley beautifully captures the delicate yet dramatic essence of a withered poppy. The petals, gracefully curling and folding, appear almost translucent, with light and shadow playing across their surface. The dark center of the flower contrasts strikingly with the soft, flowing edges, creating a sense of both fragility and resilience. The rich textures and fine details make the flower seem almost real, frozen in time. This artwork highlights the beauty in imperfection, showing how even in decay, nature remains breathtaking.

I am drawn to flowers and insects. Lately I have been influenced by the early botanical artists who would sometimes deconstruct the flower, stem and leaves in order to portray each of its parts. Often the proportions were distorted and forms were exaggerated.
