The piece represents a delicate flower, its petals rendered with an intricate interplay of light and shadow. Adjacent to the flower, a butterfly gracefully hovers, its fine details and patterns meticulously captured, adding a sense of life and movement to the composition.
The black and white palette emphasizes the texture and contrast, creating a dramatic and ethereal atmosphere. The soft, smoky gradients of the charcoal lend a dreamlike quality to the work, while the precise lines and realistic detail reflect Emsley’s mastery of the medium. The drawing evokes themes of fragility, transformation, and connection to nature, inviting the viewer into a contemplative and serene visual experience.

Margaret Emsley
I am drawn to flowers and insects. Lately I have been influenced by the early botanical artists who would sometimes deconstruct the flower, stem and leaves in order to portray each of its parts. Often the proportions were distorted and forms were exaggerated.
